OCPP 2.0.1 primer for operators

What changes from 1.6J, and when the upgrade is worth it.

Transactions

1.6J uses StartTransaction, MeterValues and StopTransaction. 2.0.1 sends one TransactionEvent message (Started, Updated, Ended), and the charger chooses the transaction id.

Device model

Configuration keys are replaced by components and variables, which describe the charger in a structured way.

Security

Security profiles (password over TLS, client certificates) and security event notifications are part of the standard.

Smart charging

Charging profiles are similar to 1.6J, but are addressed per EVSE and can name the transaction.

Should you upgrade?

Run both side by side. New hardware is often delivered with 2.0.1. Existing 1.6J chargers can stay as they are until they are replaced.
